Caffeine VS Adaptogens

Adaptogens are nature’s antidote to the stressors of modern life. For thousands of years adaptogens in the form of medicinal mushrooms and herbs have been used to support the adrenal glands, nervous system and our core energy. These days most of us are over-stressed and over-caffeinated. Whether its from jiu jitsu or struggling to meet a work deadline, our body produces the same stress response as if we were running away from a lion. If we don’t learn how to manage our stress it can become problematic and lead to a host of health conditions like fatigue, decreased immunity, hormonal imbalance and insomnia. You might even be currently experiencing some of these symptoms yourself.

So, how do adaptogens work?

Your body has two main stress-response systems that communicate with your adrenal glands; your endocrine system and your central nervous system. Adaptogens work with both of these systems to modulate the stress hormone cortisol and maintain homeostasis.

1. Adaptogens fight fatigue from all angles – they can help you cope with physical fatigue (like cordyceps), mental fatigue (like lions mane) and stress induced chronic fatigue. In today’s modern world we are more stressed than ever before. Unlike caffeine, adaptogens do not cause a rise and crash. Adaptogens extend the phase of resistance to prolong fatigue, so that you can perform better for longer.

2. Adaptogens make our bodies less sensitive to stress. It does this by actually mimicking stress, and by acting similar to a vaccine, the stress system is mildly activated in order to help the body cope with more severe stress over the course of the day.

3. Adaptogens have a stimulating effect, but are not stimulants. When you compare a stimulant such as caffeine, to adaptogens, the benefits are clear.
